Musical Director: Alan
Moore
Alan was educated at Lewis Grammar School for boys, Pengam, and was
taught music by the late renowned Welsh composer David Wynne. He
graduated from the University of Wales, Cardiff, and began his
music teaching career in the Midlands continuing for over twenty
years in St. Julians High School, Newport. It was here that he had
the opportunity to develop the musical ability of his pupils to the
full. In fact, many of his past pupils practise music all over the
world - not only as music teachers, advisors, BBC music directors,
opera controllers and professional international singers, but also
as Professors of music as far afield as China and America.
He has conducted male and mixed voice choirs for over 50 years and
has been with the Cwmbran Baroque Singers for over 35 years. During
this time the choir has gained a considerable reputation for
quality of programme and performance. His musical research has
created a rare and stimulating environment in which to practise
music particularly, but not solely, from the Baroque period and
this has resulted in a loyal and long standing core of choir
members.
Accompanist: Martyn Ridge
Martyn has been the choir accompanist since 1974. He began his
musical career with piano and organ lessons as a child, passing
grade 8 with distinction. This won him a scholarship to the Royal
School of Music, but Lloyds Bank became his chosen career.
He has held posts of Organist and Choirmaster at various churches
from age 14 including All Saints, Newport; St Mark's, Newport and
St Mary's, Abergavenny. Martyn is currently Organist and
Choirmaster at St Denys Lisvane, Cardiff, where he directs a strong
and thriving church choir.
